The killing of a senior VHP leader Laxamanada Saraswati and the violence aftermath has greatly reduced the stature of Orissa as progressive state in Indian union. With prevailing maoist trouble in the state, the open collaboration of criminals and religious hardliners have resulted in huge loss of life and property.
There are many theories are being celebrated in media and in political circles that led to leader’s killing and violence after that. Different religious groups are inciting violence cleverly while voicing their concerns. Government machinery, without ground support and adequate communication infrastructure in Kandhamal and around, has not been capable to arrest this situation quickly and effectively. Possible collaboration between religious groups and Maoists have complicated the matter further.

It is high time for government to address long-term socio-economic issues quickly apart from an effective plan for infrastructure development in the region. There has to be a strong effort to create peaceful ambience in the region and to promote tourism industry which is a natural choice for local people and entrepreneurs.
Violence in any form must be curbed with a strong determination. Orissa and its people cannot afford to lose every opportunity for progress and prosperity.
